The wasps you are most likely to encounter in Ireland are: the Common
Wasp (vespula vulgaris) and the German Wasp (vespula germanica).
The wasp season is usually between April and November (this is not a
strict rule, we deal with wasp nests all year round). An average full size
nest can hold up to 5,000 individual wasps, female wasps are the stingers
and each wasp can sting at a rate of 15 stings per minute. Wasps are
known to nest in a variety of areas i.e., attics, air vents, garden sheds,
walls, rockeries, bushes/trees, dog kennels, porches, facia boards etc.
(anywhere there is an access hole). It is very important that you do not
deal with a wasp nest for the obvious reasons. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO
SMOKE THEM OUT, HIT THE NEST WITH A STICK, DON’T
USE PARRAFIN OR DIESEL. 1,000 angry wasps can sting you
15,000 times in 1 minute. Different people react differently to wasp
stings, a sting can result in anaphylactic shock which can result in death.
DO NOT DEAL WITH WASPS YOURSELF!
